Sara Rivers
Ever since I can remember I have been motivated and excited by the activity of picture making. Over the years my creative development has undergone many disruptions due to mental health problems. My need to make marks, to make pictures is a vital part of living. After periods of breakdowns and with the proper support follows periods of break- through. These experiences which disrupt my life often also inform and give renewed creative experiences. When disturbing experiences occur, these thoughts and feelings can be channeled into creative work and balance and harmony can be restored. The struggle to maintain creative balance in life and in art is intrinsic to my practice as an artist, using paint, canvas, charcoal, pen and inks, photography or indeed any material to express an idea or feeling. I would like my work to both challenge and inspire the notion of mental health.
