RoaR of Approval

RoaR is an exciting new gallery and archive, which opened in Norwich in June and is unique in being the only public gallery in Britain dedicated to the work of marginalized and under-represented artists (often known as Outsider Art).

The management team of The Other Side Gallery thought that a visit to RoaR might be both interesting and inspiring, which indeed, it proved to be. So on a wet day in August, four of us set off in a coach for Norfolk. Karin had a map of the city, so we soon found the gallery, which is in the city centre, close to the cathedral. It is a spacious building with large, plate glass windows giving a good view of the interior to passers-by.

We were warmly welcomed by Sarah Ballard, who runs RoaR and curates the exhibitions; the current one (which opened RoaR) is called Hip Hip Hooray and features work by the Barring ton Farm Artists; a group with learning disabilities who are based at Walcott in Norfolk and with whom Sarah has a close working relationship.

After a cup of tea, we had a good look round at both the art on display and the gallery itself; the walls of which are painted a warm creamy colour providing an effective background for the art works. The gallery is well planned and arranged with plenty of hanging space and plinths for displaying sculptures and ceramics. We were all agreed in finding both the art and the gallery itself exciting, inspiring and vibrant. Some of the art is for sale and in addition there are artist's portfolios to browse through.

Sarah happily answered our questions about the setting-up and running of RoaR and we learned that the gallery building has been acquired with funds donated by a patron with a keen interest in promoting works of this kind. We met the patron, Martin, later in a café after we had left the gallery. He had come to find us, as he had been unable to attend our earlier meeting with Sarah. He told us of his role in RoaR and is clearly inspired, along with Sarah, to make the venture a success.

It was a wonderful day out and we very much enjoyed our visit to this inspiring and worthwhile gallery. We are grateful to Sarah and Martin for making us so welcome and responding so positively to our questions.
